AI Search Optimization: How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews

A growing share of the questions people used to type into Google are now typed into something else. “Best roofing company near me,” “how much does epoxy flooring cost,” “should I replace or repair my HVAC” — those queries increasingly get answered by an AI assistant that summarizes an answer and cites a handful of sources.

If your business is not among those sources, you are invisible in that conversation regardless of where you rank on page one.

This is the layer of visibility most local businesses have not addressed yet, which is exactly why it is worth addressing now. Here is how these systems actually decide what to cite, and what you can do about it.

Where AI Answers Come From

There are three distinct pathways, and they call for different tactics.

Training data. The model absorbed a snapshot of the web at some point in the past. You cannot edit this directly, and it is always somewhat out of date.

Live retrieval. Most assistants now search the web in real time when a question needs current information. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google’s AI Overviews all do some version of this. Retrieval is where most of your opportunity sits, because it reflects the web as it exists today.

Grounding sources. When an assistant retrieves, it does not read the whole internet. It pulls a small set of pages, extracts what it needs, and cites them. Being in that small set is the entire game.

What These Systems Actually Favor

The behavior differs by platform and changes frequently, so treat the following as patterns rather than fixed rules. This space moves quickly enough that anything written about it deserves rechecking every few months.

Direct, extractable answers. A page that answers a question plainly in the first two sentences of a section gets quoted. A page that builds slowly toward an answer buried in paragraph nine usually does not. Question-shaped headings followed by immediate answers work noticeably well.

Specificity. Concrete numbers, ranges, timelines, and named standards get cited. Vague marketing language does not. “Epoxy flooring in San Antonio typically runs $7 to $12 per square foot for a flake system” is citable. “We offer competitive pricing” is not.

Third-party corroboration. This is the part most businesses underinvest in. Assistants weigh what other sources say about you, not just what you say about yourself. Consistent presence across review platforms, directories, local news, industry associations, and community forums makes you a safer entity to cite.

Entity clarity. The system needs to understand what you are, where you operate, and what you do — unambiguously. Inconsistent business names, mismatched addresses across directories, or vague service descriptions make you harder to represent confidently.

Structured data. Schema markup for LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, and Review helps machines parse what a page contains. It is not a magic switch, but it removes ambiguity.

Freshness. Retrieval favors recently updated pages for anything time-sensitive. Content dated three years ago competes poorly on questions where currency matters.

The Platforms Behave Differently

Treating “AI search” as one thing leads to muddled tactics. The major surfaces have distinct habits.

Google’s AI Overviews sit on top of traditional results and lean heavily on pages that already rank well. Your existing search visibility is doing most of the work here, which is good news if your SEO is solid and bad news if it is not.

ChatGPT search tends to synthesize from a small set of retrieved sources and cites them inline. It rewards pages that answer a question cleanly and tends to favor recognizable, corroborated entities over unfamiliar ones.

Perplexity is the most citation-forward of the group, listing sources prominently. It pulls from a wider spread of results, which means a well-structured page from a smaller site has a genuine chance of being included.

Copilot and Gemini each blend their own index and retrieval behavior, and both surface local business information in ways that reward a clean, consistent entity footprint.

The practical implication: work that improves clarity, specificity, and corroboration helps across all of them, while platform-specific tricks tend to have short shelf lives.

Which Content Types Get Cited Most

Some formats show up disproportionately in AI answers, and it is worth knowing which.

Comparison content performs well because these questions are inherently comparative — X versus Y, which is better for a given situation. Cost and pricing content performs well because assistants are constantly asked what things cost and there is a shortage of businesses willing to publish real numbers. Process explanations perform well because “how does X work” is one of the most common question shapes people ask.

Frequently asked question content works when the questions are real ones and the answers are substantive. It works poorly when it is a padded list of keyword variations with two-line answers, which is what most FAQ sections are.

What performs badly is the generic service page. “We provide quality roofing services with a commitment to excellence” contains no extractable information, so nothing gets extracted. That is the single most common reason a business with a perfectly reasonable website never appears in an AI answer.

Practical Steps That Move the Needle

Restructure key pages around real questions. Take the questions customers actually ask on the phone and make them headings. Answer each in one or two sentences before elaborating. This helps human readers and machine extraction simultaneously.

Publish specifics you have been avoiding. Price ranges, timelines, what is and is not included, and where your service does not fit. Businesses hide these out of habit. AI systems cite the sources that supply them, and prospects trust them.

Fix your entity footprint. Identical business name, address, and phone number everywhere. Categories that match what you actually do. An About page that states plainly who you are, where you operate, and how long you have done it.

Get cited elsewhere. Industry directories, local publications, association memberships, supplier partner pages, genuine community discussion. Third-party mentions carry weight your own site cannot.

Keep technical fundamentals solid. If a page is slow, blocked, or rendered entirely in JavaScript, retrieval systems may not read it properly. Many of the same issues that hurt traditional rankings hurt AI visibility too — our post on the top Google ranking factors every business website should focus on covers that foundation, and it has not become less relevant.

Decide on crawler access deliberately. Various AI crawlers can be allowed or blocked in robots.txt. Blocking them protects content but removes you from those answers. Make that a decision rather than an accident.

How to Measure Something With No Rank Tracker

There is no clean position number here, so measurement looks different.

Test your own queries. Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask and record who gets cited. Do it monthly and track movement. It is manual and it is the most honest signal available.

Watch referral traffic. Assistant referrals show up in analytics under their own domains. Volume is typically modest, but it converts unusually well — people arriving from an AI recommendation have already been pre-sold.

Track branded search. When people encounter your name in an AI answer, many search it directly afterward. A rise in branded impressions often precedes a rise in AI citations you can observe.

Monitor mentions rather than rankings. The metric is whether you appear in the answer at all.

This Does Not Replace SEO

Worth being blunt about, since some of the noise around this suggests otherwise.

The signals AI systems use overlap heavily with traditional search signals — authority, relevance, technical health, and reputation. A site that is well-optimized for search is already most of the way to being citable. What changes is emphasis: clearer answer structure, more specificity, and considerably more attention to what third parties say about you.

Businesses that treat this as an addition to a solid SEO foundation do well. Businesses chasing it as a replacement usually end up with neither.

Start Where You Already Rank

The most efficient starting point is content that already performs. Those pages are trusted and retrieved. Restructuring them for extractability is faster than building new authority from nothing.
